A Children’s Guide to Understanding the Coronavirus (COVID-19)

In 1971, Marvin Gaye recorded one of his most famous songs, “What’s Going On.” As the death toll from the coronavirus surpasses 200,000 in the U.S. alone, parents are faced with the challenge of trying to explain to their children, “what’s going on” regarding the coronavirus. This is an especially critical discussion when their kids want to go outside to play with friends, go to the movies with relatives or celebrate a birthday with classmates. To help parents address this critical concern, Ronald Holmes recently published a new book entitled: A Children’s Guide to Understanding the Coronavirus (COVID-19).
This book teaches children about the coronavirus and 10 ways to protect themselves and other people from the disease. It provides colorful illustrations to capture children’s imagination while developing their reading and thinking skills. Children can color the illustrations on each page, which further enhances the learning process. Elementary teachers and homeschool parents can use the book to facilitate classroom instructions on COVID-19, build the student’s vocabulary and apply learning to practice.
This book is also useful for elementary principals since it is aligned with a 30-minute online program to collectively educate elementary students on COVID-19. The curriculum covers three objectives: (1) what is COVID-19; (2) how does COVID-19 spread; and (3) what actions students can take to protect themselves and others from getting the virus.
