Women’s tennis team wins first SWAC title for FAMU

Florida A&M women’s tennis defeated Jackson State for the second time this season to capture the SWAC tennis championship in New Orleans. The win gives the Rattlers an automatic berth into the upcoming NCAA regionals. This is the first SWAC tennis championship for FAMU, which joined the conference in 2021. The Rattlers went undefeated against conference opponents this season and for the 11th time in a SWAC matchup, they won the doubles point in dramatic fashion. Veronica Rodriguez and Rebekkah Gaines won their match easily 6-3. After Regan Harris and Genesis Whitelock lost their match, it was up to Sierra Sandy and Sara Rakim to secure the point. The match went back and forth with the Tigers before the Rattlers won 7-6, taking the tiebreaker point 10-8. In singles play, Sandy dominated her opponent winning 6-1, 6-1. Gaines won her match 6-3, 7-5 and Harris clinched the victory for the Rattlers by coming back from being down 0-6 in the first set to clinch it by taking the next two sets 6-2, 6-4.
