Women repeat as MEAC outdoor track champions

The FAMU women’s track and field team scored 75 points during the final day of competition to repeat as outdoor champions of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University.
FAMU captured the title this past Saturday. It’s the 11th for the program since 1987 and it also marked the third time in school history that the Rattlers have repeated as champions. FAMU last repeated as champion during a four-year stretch, starting in 1997.
“We pretty much had perfect performances at this meet,” said coach Darlene Moore, who was selected as the Outstanding Coach for the second consecutive year. “We knew we would have to score big in our throwing events and distance events on the first two days.
“I couldn’t be more proud of our young ladies. It is hard to win a championship, much less two in a row. We are definitely striking in the classroom, on the track and in the field.”
FAMU’s Andrea Aaron won the Outstanding Field Athlete Award as she accumulated 29 points in the event. She won the shot put, finished second in hammer, third in the javelin and fourth in the discus.
“The girls have been performing well this year and we executed extremely well in the field and distance events over the first two days,” said Moore. “That helped us build up enough of a lead to hold off everyone in the final day which we did.
“After finishing second in the Indoors, we knew we would have to step it up to outdistance our competition, and we did just that.”
