What brings me hope
Spreading hope in the community
I participated in two community outreach events two weekends ago. They brought back powerful memories. Mothers In Crisis teamed up with Wings of a Dove Ministries founder, Pastor Minnie Ford and provided hot meals to various people in the Frenchtown community.
We were in the heart of an extremely busy corner and in addition to the wonderful dinner, Mothers In Crisis was there to share hope during April National Month of Hope.
I remembered when Frenchtown used to have a thriving juke joint right in the location that we stood. It was during my college days, and I used to ride a very loud motorcycle up and down that area. It is amazing how things have changed for the better. The people who participated in the outreach were workers who stopped by the store and those walking along the street. We met many positive people who were very appreciative of the meal and receptive to the message of hope.
The next day we participated in a lovely community outreach at St. John Missionary Baptist Church in the heart of the Bond community. The church is located right around the corner from the storefront building that Mothers In Crisis’ chapel, Turning Point International Church, started out in back in 1998. We were there for four years until we moved to our church home on Highway 20.
Being there brought back memories of how I spent many days driving around this area as a great deal of Mothers In Crisis’ former clients lived here. I will never forget how I first met Nettie Palmore who remains an intricate part of Mothers In Crisis, while driving through this same area. She stopped my car at a stop sign and asked if she could be a part of Mothers In Crisis and as the saying goes, the rest is history.
It was good to be out in the community spreading hope because we can travel the world, but charity begins at home. In both locations people knew about Mothers In Crisis but they did not know that April is the National Month of Hope and that Mothers In Crisis founded it through the National Day Calendar. We still have a lot of work to do but it is extremely rewarding and definitely needed.
