TPD awarded Project Safe Neighborhoods grant

TPD Chief Lawrence Revell

To enhance public safety, the Tallahassee City Commission unanimously accepted a Project Safe Neighborhoods grant totaling more than $120,000 from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement at its meeting last Wednesday night.

The Project Safe Neighborhoods grant will support the enhancement of investigations by the Tallahassee Police Department into people and organizations involved in violent crime, firearm offenses and the sale of illegal narcotics. It also supports additional training for officers, the purchase of new equipment and conflict resolution training for youth in the community to enhance violent crime prevention efforts.

“Enhancing community safety will always be our number one priority and main focus,” TPD Chief Lawrence Revell said. “Through Project Safe Neighborhoods, we will be able to improve information sharing across multiple agencies and coordinate a more comprehensive approach to reducing violent crime in the community, while also providing more training and equipment for our officers.”

TPD was awarded the grant because of its development of a multi-faceted strategic proposal to utilize the funding. The proposal includes the implementation of a Gang Task Force consisting of members from TPD and the Leon County Sheriff’s Office. The Gang Task Force will also utilize existing relationships with the Gadsden County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Postal Service, U.S. Marshals Service, U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

TPD aims to continuously enhance public safety and the quality of life enjoyed by residents. It is committed to addressing violent crime in the community and actively seeks supplemental resources to support the improvement of public safety operations and multi-agency collaborations.
