TCC celebrates women, girls in science with virtual mentoring session
Special to the Outlook
Community College celebrated women and girls in science during a virtual mentoring session last Friday.
The “Celebration of Women and Girls in Science: Stories in STEM, Changing the Narrative” was a virtual mentoring session in collaboration with Florida A&M University and Florida State University to advise students in the Big Bend region interested in STEM fields.
Former NASA Astronaut and STEM Educator, Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger was the keynote speaker.
“This unique event allowed young girls in our local area to interact with female scientists at various stages in their careers,” said Renee Gordon, STEM Program Director at TCC. “This under-represented demographic even spoke with a former astronaut today. This encourages girls to pursue their goals with confidence. The three institutions that hosted the event, TCC being open access, FAMU being a Historically Black College or University (HBCU), and FSU being a Research I institution showcase the many pathways students can choose.”
Leon, Gadsden, Wakulla, Jefferson, Liberty and Franklin counties participated in the virtual session.
