The first runner-up is Kiera Johnson, also a senior at Rickards. She holds a 3.6 unweighted GPA and plans to attend either FAMU or Spelman College this fall to major in political science/family law. She is also active in school and civic organizations. As first runner-up, Kierra will receive a one-time $500 textbook stipend.

The scholarships awarded are in memory of the late Elrea Snellings-Gibbs, a beloved Leon County educator and member of the Chi Upsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. A staunch advocate for girls and for HBCUs, she received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from FAMU. She taught for several years at James S. Rickards High School before transferring to Lawton Chiles High School. Chi Upsilon Omega is honored to continue her legacy of scholarship through this award.
