Robertson carries FAMU’s postseason hope in NCAA national meet

One of the most tenacious athletes on FAMU’s track and field team this year will attempts to capture a title at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships this weekend.

Rachel Robertson is scheduled to compete for the Rattlers in the triple jump on Saturday in Eugene, Ore., at the University of Oregon. Robertson becomes the second consecutive Rattler to earn a trip to the championships. 

Robertson is going to the national event after qualifying with a jump of 12.94 meters, which came on her final jump at the East preliminary meet. The jump placed her 10th in a field of 46 competitors.

Robertson has had a few remarkable performances during the indoor and outdoor seasons.

She placed first at the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s outdoor title meets.

The season also was a fascinating one 

Jaylyn Scott, who became the fastest outdoor 400-meter hurdler in the history of the men’s program. He holds the school record in the event and recently concluded his season at NCAA East preliminary meet in Bloomington, Ind.

Throughout his career at FAMU, Scott also managed seven first-place wins in the event. 

A few days prior NCAA event, the senior from Bainbridge, Ga., posted a time of 51.53 to earn an automatic qualification to the quarterfinals, where he ran in at 51.70. That left him 20th overall, with only the top 12 being eligible to advance.

Scott, who ran in back-to-back NCAA outdoor meets, had an impressive career at FAMU. His accolades include this year’s SWAC championships, where he won the 400-meter hurdles (51.40) / outdoors, and he placed third place in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 48.44 and competing on the and 4×400 indoor relay team (3:16.91).

At this year’s NCAA Division I Track & Field Outdoor Championships, he was 21st overall in the 400-meter hurdles (51.73).
