Rattlers close Dawson Classic with win over Southern

The Rattlers’ bats came alive in the third and sixth for five runs in each inning to carry FAMU to a 16-1 victory over Southern in the Andre Dawson Classic.

The victory gave FAMU a 2-1 record in the tournament. A 5-4 setback against Prairie View was their only loss, which came after the Rattlers defeated Grambling 7-6 in their opening game.

The Rattlers played a mid-week two-game set against Mercer before heading to Atlanta for the Ralph Garr-Bill Lucas HBCU Baseball Classic. FAMU will take on Grambling in two games, one each Friday and Saturday.

Sunday’s win over Southern was the hugest offensive output by the Rattlers (4-3) this season. Senior True Fontenot racked up five hits and senior Adam Haidermota added four more in the win.

Junior right-hander Jacob Granger got the win, his first of the season.  He pitched six shutout innings while giving up three hits without allowing a walks and striking out four.

In addition to his five hits, Fontenot drove in four runs. Haidermota added three doubles and two RBI to his four-hit performance as well. Senior Sebastian Greico also had two hits in four trips to the plate, including a home run and three RBI.
