Special to the Outlook
Elder Dr. Robert M Butler Jr. recently earned his doctoral degree in theological studies from the BC Graham Theological Seminary, along with Pastor Alfreddie Scott and Elder Lissa Stevens.
The three graduates marched in to the sounds of Pomp and Circumstance at an outdoor ceremony led by the school’s chancellor and founder Dr. Bobby C Graham. Minister Apostle Dr. Rosalind Lewis Tompkins, founder of Mothers in Crisis and Turning Point, presided over the event.
It was witnessed by family, friends and dignitaries from around the country who showed up at the Riley Museum. An opening prayer and song filled the audience with a spirit of love and appreciation for the journey that the graduates experienced in their studies to earn degrees in theology.
Minister Nasheka Jones’ rendition of the song, “I Won’t Complain,” set the mood of joy and happiness for the three new doctors in the ministry, as they continue ministering to their prospective communities.
Butler, an ordained minister since 1980, was presented a proclamation from the city of Tallahassee. He is a member of the Neal’s Temple Holiness Church, where he is director of Christian education and men’s ministry. Elder Butler was also bestowed an Honorary Doctorate from Thomas Brown College Seminary Jacksonville, Fla. He earned a Master of Arts in Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix Ariz., and a Bachelor of Science in Religion at Gulf Coast Bible College Seminary, and is a Certified Dean of Christian Leadership Sunday School Publishing Board National Baptist Convention USA. He is also certified in computer technology, Career Development Institute, Grant Writing 1&2, University of Florida Extension School, Criminal Justice, Chipola Junior College.
Butler is currently an adjunct professor at Florida State Seminary Panama City, Fla. He and his wife Maggie Lewis Butler have two daughters, seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Butler’s impact in the community is evident by his development of young people as a certified Scout Master, a member of the 100 Black Men of Tallahassee and the NAACP.
The rigorous program that the graduates completed required a 100 score on every test they took. The graduates also showed maturity in their love of God and His word by reading, meditating and memorizing God’s word.
Dr. Marvin Davis’ inspirational message of “the five ships” left the graduates and audience with a charge to build relationships, fellowship, discipleship, stewardship and worship.
