Omega Psi Phi and Omega Lamplighters Honor Dr. Aubrey Perry Sr.

Dr. Aubrey Perry Sr. was honored and recognized recently at the third The Color of Excellence Oratorical Competition.
Young men in grades four to 12 presented original speeches and provided unique viewpoints on the topic, “What did you learn about yourself and America in 2020 and how has it changed your life?”
The Chi Omega Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. was sponsor for this great event and Brother Anthony Thomas served as the Master of Ceremonies for the evening. This event marked three years of honoring Brother Aubrey Perry Sr. and showcasing the oratorical skills of the Omega Lamplighters and Omega Junior Lamplighters.
The event featured the reciting of the Black Pledge of Allegiance by Omega Lamplighter Amari Thomas, and Black History Fact Videos presented by the Omega Junior Lamplighters Ricardo Smith, Gavin Courtney, Ar’Tavian Brown, Ricky Harris, and Khylil Johnson.
The Omega Lamplighters and Omega Junior Lamplighters also showcased several orators in the High School, Middle School, and Elementary School categories. Orators included, Darell Williams, Terrance McPherson, David Leconte, Malik Webb, Caleb Johnson, Joshua Edwards, Ethan Scott, and Jakobi Winfrey.
Brother Royle King (Director/CEO of The Omega Lamplighters) and Brother Larry Harris (Program Director of the Omega Junior Lamplighters) were instrumental in helping these young men prepare and perform at this special event.
Brother Curtis Rush of the Chi Omega Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. gave an introduction to Brother Aubrey Perry with a meet Dr. Aubrey Perry video presentation. This event would not have been a success without the tireless efforts of Brother Dr. James Moran and Brother Leroy Peck. Brother Peck allowed us to use his studio to produce the event and Brother Dr. Moran spent many hours filming and editing until the finished product was done.
Brother Dr. Aubrey Perry’s journey began in Petersburg, Virginia and ended up in the city of Tallahassee. A man of honor and great distinction Brother Perry made his mark in Tallahassee, both academically and socially.
His accomplishments include: Dean Emeritus and Professor of Psychology Emeritus- Florida A&M University, Appointed Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Florida A&M University in 1984, his research has appeared in many professional journals (Psychology Reports, The American Psychologist), first Black to receive his Doctorate degree in Psychology from Florida State University, and the first Black to become licensed as a psychologist in the State of Florida. The Chi Omega chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. is honored to have a man of distinction amongst its rank and will continue this annual event with the Omega Lamplighters to promote Black orators and Black history.
