New Sparks to the Flame

Special to the Outlook
In a style befitting the fraternity in which they are modeled after, the Omega Lamplighters Club of Tallahassee welcomed in its fall 2014 class of inductees with precision and showmanship.
On Saturday, Jan. 10, at the Tookes Health Center on FAMU’s campus, The “Dynamic Dozen,” as they were aptly named, enthusiastically put on a show of steps and marches taught to them by the Brothers of Omega Psi Phi for those in attendance at the ceremony.
With such riveting performance, the new class boldly announced their introduction into the organization. The young men were inducted into this prestigious mentoring program after a series of workshops and activities bent on personal development and character, with the assistance of the Chi Omega & the Upsilon Psi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. of Tallahassee, FL.
Leon County Commissioner Nick Maddox was on hand as keynote speaker and addressed the inductees and the crowd with some scintillating words of encouragement. The organization is open to males between the ages of 12-18 years-old in Leon and surrounding counties.
The organization provides mentoring, guidance and leadership skills to prepare the young men for their academic and professional future. The Lamplighter membership allows for American College Testing or ACT and Scholastic Aptitude Test or SAT assistance in addition to scholarships and ongoing workshops throughout the school year. At the end of the school year, the organization holds a formal banquet to acknowledge the young men in the club highlighting the rising college bound seniors.
During their initiation period, the fall 2014 inductees participated in several preparatory workshops to reach this momentous occasion. For the 2014-2015 school year, the community will see these young men participate in community service, excellence in academics, and above all exemplify leadership, academics, maturity and perseverance, which are the principles of the Lamplighter’s organization.
This is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, if you would like to donate or offer any services that may benefit the young men please contact Mr. Royle King at (214)364-2921 or Mr. Iman Sandifer at (954) 662-1721.
