Adrienne Lucas was recently recognized as the Soror of the Year for the Delta Kappa Omega Graduate Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority , Incorporated.

Each year the chapter recognizes one of its members for her active participation, leadership and exemplary commitment to the chapter’s programs and activities.

Lucas, a 16-year member of the sorority, serves on the chapter’s Executive Committee and is the financial secretary of the chapter. She is also co-chairman of the Budget and Finance Committee and leads the chapter’s “Pearls of Joy” Choir.

During her time in the sorority, she has served in several other leadership roles.

“I am humbled and honored to have received this award,” says Lucas. “I am thankful to everyone who voted for me and everyone who recognized that all that I do has been out of love for our Chapter and for my community.”

Lucas said the award is also very special because her late sister Karen Bennett had also received the same honor during her time in the chapter.

Lucas has been hailed as one who is always willing to give her time and expertise where needed. Her work and service to the chapter extends beyond the committees where she was appointed. For example, she was an active participant in the chapter’s Relay for Life efforts as a cancer survivor. She volunteered to represent the chapter as a regional delegate—and while at the conference sang in the Regional Choir. She also assisted an elderly member of the chapter in multiple ways. Moreover, she readily serves as a mentor to others in the chapter.

“Adrienne is an outstanding leader, and she has consistently used her time, talent and service to make our chapter and this community better,” said Vettye Gibbs, president of the chapter. “She is a phenomenal woman whose heart for volunteering makes a transformational difference in the lives of others.”

Donna Harvey nominated Lucas for the award.

“I am impressed by Adrienne’s ability to serve over and beyond in Delta Kappa Omega and still give her all through service to her family, church and commitment to other community organizations she is involved in,” Harvey said.

Lucas attributed her drive to her faith, reciting her favorite scriptures (Proverb 16:3): “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.”

Lucas is especially proud of her service to Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, where she has been a member for 63 years. She said she desires to use “her spiritual gifts to love, encourage and serve others.”

At Bethel she is a member of several ministries, including the Women’s Ministry, Ministry of Compassion and a leader in the Music Ministry’s Voices of Bethel. She also is an advisor to the Collegiate and the Young Adult Ministry.

Lucas, who was raised in Tallahassee, graduated from FSU, where she received a bachelor’s degree criminology. Prior to retirement, she worked for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for 38 years in the areas of criminal intelligence, Office of Inspector General and the Division of Professionalism. While at the agency, Lucas received the Commissioner’s Award for exemplary service.

She is married to Michael Lucas, her husband for 40 years. They are the parents of a son, Marquis.

The Delta Kappa Omega Chapter is honored to have among its members, women like Adrienne Lucas, who live a life of service and leadership. The local DKO chapter, founded in 1947, embraces the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s international mission of “service to all mankind.”
