Local Sorority Supports Motion Picture Film, Hidden Figures

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ‑ The inspiring new film, Hidden Figures, which will be playing in theatres this Friday, January 6, 2017, tells an incredible untold story of three African-American women: Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson- who served as the brains behind the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit.
Despite their hardships of working under Virginia’s Jim Crow laws, the women succeeded in helping the United States make major advances in its aeronautics and astronautics programs, as well as declare victory over Russia in the Space Race. In addition to working at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the brilliant “aeronautical trio” also became members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated – the oldest Greek-letter international service organization founded by college educated women at Howard University on January 15, 1908.
The ladies of the Delta Kappa Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the Tallahassee Alumni chapter of the organization, desire to show the community its support of the Hidden Figures movie, and will use this time of unity to reflect and celebrate the significant work of NASA’s black female pioneers.
In the spirit of the film, the Chapter will continue its missions of education and scholarship to inspire and advance young girls and women to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
Others are encouraged to show support by purchasing tickets for the movie.
Proceeds will benefit the STEM Programs for youth in the Tallahassee community.
