Local Chapter of Deltas travel to Las Vegas for annual convention

The members of the Tallahassee Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. are refreshed, renewed and reinvigorated to serve the Big Bend community after traveling to Las Vegas for their annual convention in August.
The gathering included workshops and convocations to update over 10,000 Delta members about the sorority’s accomplishments since its last convention in 2015, as well as outlining goals for the next two years. Delta Sigma Theta, the nation’s largest public service sorority, remains focused on social action, political awareness and involvement, international awareness and involvement, educational development, economic development and physical and mental health.
“Locally, we are active in the community with signature events like the Youth Empowerment Summit and the Pamper Me Pink breast cancer fundraiser,” said Marilyn Henderson, president of the Tallahassee Alumnae Chapter. “The convention in Las Vegas allowed me to reconnect with sorors near and far and gave us additional tools to strengthen our work back home.”
Roughly 30 members of the Tallahassee Alumnae Chapter traveled West for the convention. In addition to the learning sessions, there was also a social action luncheon featuring Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, a gospel concert headlined by Hezekiah Walker and Tasha Cobbs, a gala featuring Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, and excursions to explore Las Vegas and nearby destinations like Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon.
Beverly Smith, who hails from the Atlanta area, was elected as the 26th National President during the convention.
Coinciding with the convention was the sorority’s annual Presidential Youth Conference, a prestigious program whose members are hand-picked through a competition application process. Acacia Mills, a recent graduate of Wakulla High School and a former member of the Delta G.E.M.S., represented the Tallahassee Alumnae Chapter at the conference.
