Outlook Staff Report

When members of the Tallahassee chapter of the Links Inc. took off from Cascades Park for their annual health walk, it didn’t go off with a lot of fanfare.

But the message was clear this past Saturday morning.

“We do this every September to promote healthy living among ourselves (and) families,” said Darice Mitchell, vice president of the chapter.

The Links organization partnered with LifeQuest Organ Recovery Services. The collaboration was an easy one, said Kim Gilmore, senior public education coordinator with Lifequest Organ Recovery Services and Donate Florida. She added that it was a good fit because of the Links’ initiative to promote organ donation.

Saturday’s awareness walk should help recruit donors, Gilmore said, noting that there is a lengthy waiting list. More than 80 percent of individuals on the list are in need of kidney transplants, she said.

“We really don’t want people to be on a list waiting for a transplant,” Gilmore said, “so we are going to talk about how people can keep their kidneys healthy and stay off that list.”
