Leon County Schools held its elementary art exhibit last week at the LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library in recognition of March being Youth Art Month.
The library was filled with colorful banners of schools’ names heralding students’ artwork. The schools on display included: Appalachee, Astoria Park, Bond, Buck Lake, Canopy Oaks, Conley, Chaires, Desoto Trail, Fort Braden, Gilchrist, Everhart, Hartsfield, Hawks Rise, Kate Sullivan, Killearn Lakes, Oakridge, Pineview, Riley, Roberts, Ruedigar, Sabal Palm, Sealey, Springwood, Woodville and W.T. Moore Elementary schools.
More than 100 turned out for the event to show support of students’ art. Kids showcased their best work of art on many different levels from intermediate to even Lego building.
All of the teachers are artists and have a unique way of teaching their students.
Erin McDowell has been an art teacher for at least 25 years and said, “This event shows how important art is and let’s the community know that it takes a particular skill set that the students have to learn.”
Czarina Cadenhead is a student at Appalachee Elementary School who had a clay exhibit on display.
“I will miss doing the exhibit, I am very happy when I create art with clay,” said Czarina.
Parents were more excited to see their kids art work and their creativity. Jennifer Cadenhead, mother of Czarina, was thrilled and pleased to see her daughter’s work on display.
“Being a parent and witnessing my daughter’s art talent in the library is very pleasing. My daughter will be moving on to middle school next year and will no longer be participating in the next upcoming exhibit in future years to come, depending on the middle school she attend,” said Cadenhead.
Jessica Stringer and Ariana Dalaniga attends Governors Charter Elementary School and came in for books.
“We were actually aware at what was going on with the library. Knowing that when the parking lot is full I know it is one of those art display days,” said Jessica Stringer.
