Special to the Outlook

Leon County Board of County Commissioners issued a proclamation, recognizing October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in support of individuals battling the disease.

The board also honored breast cancer survivors in an effort to raise awareness and encourage the public to get screened for the disease.

The occasion was marked with a proclamation plaque presentation by Commissioner Carolyn Cummings. Participants in the ceremony were the health officer for the Florida Department of Health in Leon County, Brandi Knight; Program Administrator Monique Coleman, and Environmental Administrator Joya McCarty.

The presentation event provided an opportunity to promote the health department’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program. The Department is immensely proud of the strides they have made over the years to identify barriers and improve access to quality care for women ages 50-64 who have low income and are underinsured or uninsured.

The Department refers an average of 350 women to mammograms each year. Individuals can contact the Health Department at (850) 404-6404 to learn more about the program.
