Godby Dismantles Leon With Strong Show on Offense, Tough Defense

After losing by two touchdowns a week earlier at Niceville, Godby High School came into Gene Cox Stadium with a bit of a chip on its shoulder.

 
The Cougars’ opponent, Leon High School, came in search of a win that would have moved the Lions even closer to their 600th victory.

 
The Cougars, however, refused to be denied their second victory of the season Friday night by beating the Lions 35-7. That left the Lions at 2-2 for the season and still at 597 victories in school history.

 
“After a tough loss last week, we came into this game saying we have to win,” said Godby quarterback Darius Bradwell. “We had to hit them in the mouth.”
Indeed the Cougars did from the outset, with Bradwell leading a relentless offense that had a 21-7 lead by halftime.

 
Bradwell played one more quarter before going out with a sprained ankle, giving way to back-up Peyton Scharinger. Bradwell completed 7 of 17 passes for 100 yards, picking up most of those before halftime to go with 50 yards of rushing for 123 of the Cougars’ total offense.

 
“I have to be versatile with this offense to create spaces and opportunities for our other players,” Bradwell said. “Our receivers did real good tonight but we have to get better at the passing game.”

Bradwell and Scharinger combined for 124 passing yards. Neither had trouble reducing the field, thanks to special teams and the punting of Logan Roberts, who kept Leon starting deep into its territory for most of the night.

 
“We are 2-2 but we are about four plays away from being a 4-0 team,” said Godby’s coach Todd Lanter. “We still have not put things together like we want it.
“Leon is a whole lot better than they have been. (Tim) Coakly is doing a great job with that group. I don’t think they played their best game against us tonight.”
The Cougars’ defense saw to that.

 
After making one of its few three-and-out stops against Godby in the third quarter, quarterback Ty Glasco started the Lions’ offense from its best field position of the night at the Cougars’ 33 yard line. But they couldn’t get more than eight yards on three running plays then tried to go for it on fourth down.

 
FSU commit Cedric Wood made it an impossible task, stopping running back Darquez Brutton before he could get out of the backfield.

 
“It was just a matter of building a wall with the defensive line,” Wood said. “It was just a matter of playing discipline.”

Bentonville (Ark.) 37, Rickards 8

After sitting out Rickards’ last game with an injury, quarterback DD Phillips returned to the Raiders’ lineup, but a lackluster offensive performance proved costly in a 37-8 loss to Betonville in Arkansas last Friday night.

 
It was the first loss for the Raiders, who went on the road with an unbeaten (3-0) record. Phillips threw for 146 yards, completing 18 of 32 attempts, but Betonville shut down the Raiders’ running attack.

 
Running back Delvon Williams scored their only touchdown and finished the game with 66 yards on 16 carries. Chad Hunter was Phillips top receiver with four catches for 46 yards.

 
Rickards’ defense had some bright spots, mostly from Malcolm Chaires, who had an interception and caused a fumble that was recovered by Jordan Brownlee. He had six tackles and a sack for the Raiders.

 
Rickards returns to Cox Stadium on Friday to face Lincoln, which is coming off its first win a week ago.
