On Sept. 5, Florida State University Cheer and Golden Girls Dance Team held their annual Spear-It Day to kick off the first game of the season against Texas State University.
Spear-It Day is a cheer and dance clinic, specializing in teaching traditional Florida State spirit routines, perfecting stunting techniques and showcasing the true Seminole spirit.
For a $50 registration fee, the participants received a “Spear-It Day” t-shirt, a ticket to the game, a meal voucher and the experience of a lifetime to perform in Doak Campbell Stadium.
Staci Sutton, director of FSU spirit programs, explains, “It is an opportunity for them to hang out with the cheerleaders and dancers to learn some material. They get to join in on the sidelines for pre-game and lead Doak Campbell in the traditional Florida State cheer.”
This year’s clinic brought in about 400 participants, ranging from ages 4 to 18, including school cheer teams, dance teams and individuals. Schools from the Panama City and Coral Springs area were in attendance; however, none of the participating schools were from the city of Tallahassee.
Tully Gym was packed with hundreds of eager, energetic, spirited boys and girls and their families. Participants rotated to various stations throughout the day learning cheers, chants, band dances and take-home dance routines. The take-home hip-hop and jazz routines were performed to hit singles “Uptown Funk” and “Want You to Want Me.”
After hours of rigorous practice, the participants were ready to show their families the final product before taking on Bobby Bowden Field.
“We put this on every year in hopes to build our fan base for the Florida State Cheer program, as well as, have our girls interact with the community,” says all-girl cheer coach, Natasha Goodman.
“A lot of these girls here really look up to the Florida State Cheerleaders.”
