Special to the Outlook

The City of Tallahassee received top honors from the American Public Works Association Florida Chapter for the FAMU Way project as the recipient of the 2022 Project of the Year Award.

Through the project, FAMU Way was extended, creating a new east-to-west connection from South Monroe Street to Lake Bradford Road, approximately 1.5 miles. From its inception, the project aimed to provide multimodal uses.

Bike facilities, a multi-use trail, wide sidewalks and on-street parking, including ADA compliant spaces, were constructed. With a multitude of overhead utilities moved underground and the addition of ample landscaping, custom lighting and public art on utility boxes along the corridor, it is now one of the most beautiful roadways in Tallahassee.

Additionally, the project enhanced safety and reduced localized flooding in the area by removing a deep, open ditch that used to run alongside FAMU Way. Stormwater conveyance capacity was increased and enclosed underground. Existing and new stormwater ponds were thoughtfully integrated as amenities, offering park-like experiences.

FAMU Way was also designed to be a destination. It offers a playground, picnic spaces, flexible market space and event plaza. Other amenities are currently in development by the Blueprint Intergovernmental Agency, including the Skateable Art Park, a public restroom and the History and Culture Trail featuring educational and public art elements.

The award recognized FAMU Way Phases 1-3 Roadway Improvements and Capital Cascades Trail Segment 3 in the Transportation $5 million to $25 million category.
