FAMU’s School of Journalism & Graphic Communication will host the Dow Jones News Fund HBCU Digital Media Institute on May 26-28.

The institute will offer three days of virtual training in digital media for 25 students who will be immersed in the latest newsgathering and storytelling techniques. Participating students will be able to expand skills, including website design, videography, data visualization, photography and immersive technologies.

Students interested in attending the training should apply on line (https://famusjgc.com/digital-institute/) by Monday, May 3 at 5 p.m. The virtual training event will introduce fellows to digital storytelling techniques. There is no fee for students to attend the institute.

Professor Francine Huff, FAMU Knight chair for student achievement, will direct the digital media institute. Other instructors include Michael Grant, founder at Get Current Studio; Michelle Johnson, associate professor of the practice, multimedia journalism, Boston University; Alicia Hope, visiting instructor, FAMU; Justyn Thomas, partner and creative director, 422 Agency; and L. Michelle Salvant, founder of L. Michelle Media.

“We are looking forward to hosting this digital media institute to offer intensive multimedia training that will help prepare students to be more competitive in the job market, as well as take the skills back to their student media outlets,” Huff said. “It’s exciting to be able to offer this training opportunity to students at SJGC as well as students from other HBCUs.”

The Institute is seeking a cohort of rising sophomores, juniors and seniors from HBCU campuses across the country who are interested in learning digital media skills.
