FAMU athletes top in classroom, top-five at conference meet

Less than a day after placing 21 athletes on the MEAC’s All-Academic team, the FAMU men’s and women’s team completed top-five finishes in the conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at Landover, Md.
Although coach Darlene Moore was looking for the track title, she was pleased with her athletes’ performance in the classroom.
“I am an educator at heart so success in academics is imperative for athletes to remain on my team,” Moore said. “I stress to them that they can’t concentrate on performing well on the field if they aren’t performing well in the classroom.”
MEAC sophomore, junior and senior student-athletes with a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average, as well as transfer student-athletes who have been in residence at the university for at least one year, were eligible for All-Academic accolades.
On the track this past weekend, the FAMU women scored 96.50 points to place third, while the men finished fifth with 56 points at the Prince George Learning Complex.
It was the men’s first championship competition in three years after APR sanctions.
The women finished behind North Carolina A&T (173.50) and Bethune-Cookman (111). North Carolina A&T won the men’s title with 144 points, followed by Hampton (108), Bethune-Cookman (97.50) and Norfolk State (68.50)
FAMU’s David Too was named Most Outstanding Runner in the men’s division for his performances in the mile, 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters.
By sweeping both the men’s and women’s indoor titles, North Carolina A&T State becomes the first MEAC school to repeat in both the men and women since Delaware State in 1987.
