Families show up for book bags, food giveaway

During a little more than three hours, hundreds of people showed up at the Enrichment Center for a back-to-school event. Children had 500 book bags to choose from, while food was distributed to families.

Live Communications, with the support from several other sponsors, staged the event at the Enrichment Center last Saturday. It turned out to be a “fun day” for families that brought children who enjoyed a bounce house, cotton candy, hot dogs and nachos.

Saturday’s event was just a continuation of what Live Communications has been doing during the pandemic, said Darius “Doc” Baker, program director at Hallelujah 95.3.

“We just felt it necessary to do it again even though things are ramping back up with the Delta variant,” Baker said. “Kids still have needs. They are going back into the classrooms so why not provide this for the kids.”

Not far from the hub of activity, Jarvis Rosier, Chief Rabban of Ahmed Temple No. 37, and members of other local lodges, assisted a drive-through food distribution.

“The line is steady,” said Rosier. “There is still a need and this is what we are about. Our shrine is about charity and we want to let everybody know we are working the charitable aspects in the community.”
