On Giving Tuesday, representatives from Envision Credit Union (Envision) presented a check for $10,000 to America’s Second Harvest of the Big Bend’s Backpack Program. Envision’s Swipe for Schools year-long initiative contributes five cents to Second Harvest’s Backpack Program with each “swipe” of an Envision debit card. After presenting the check, Envision team members worked alongside Second Harvest staff to fill backpacks with food in honor of Giving Tuesday.

“Envision’s core values are built upon supporting our local education systems,” said Darryl G. Worrell, President and CEO of Envision. “We are grateful for the work Second Harvest does for students within our local community and are proud to support their efforts through Swipe for Schools on this day of giving back.”

The Backpack Program provides 21 schools in the Big Bend region with backpacks of food to cover the nutritional needs of eligible students over the weekends. Through the Backpack Program, more than 1,200 at-risk children are fed each week benefiting students’ overall health, attendance and performance. The nine-year program does not receive any federal funding. Therefore, relies on donations from the community and entities such as Envision.

“Children in our communities deserve to lead a life without worry of an empty stomach over the weekend,” said Shannon Piotrowski, Director of Programs for Second Harvest. “The number of children we are able to feed is dependent upon the amount of money we are able to raise and, thanks to Envision, we will be able to help students return to school ready to learn.”

Envision’s five-year commitment to Swipe for Schools exhibits the credit union’s dedication to education. Beginning in 1954, 10 teachers founded Envision Credit Union with a mission to support local educators. Envision has preserved those ideals through ongoing efforts to support teachers, schools and students throughout their twelve-county region. Envision’s annual investment contributes to local schools through a variety of scholarship programs, grants, sponsorships, discounts and volunteer hours.
