Community program raises money for scholarship
Special to the Outlook
The second annual Unity in the Community program was recently held at Allen Temple CME Church. The theme of the program was “Staying strong in faith.”
Rev. O’Hara C. Black, pastor of Pineland M.B. Church, was guest speaker at the event intended to bring the community together in fellowship and love.
The event was established by the children of the late Mercedes Hall Thomas as a scholarship fundraiser. Hall Thomas was a long-time member of Allen Temple CME Church.
An estimated $2,000 was raised, with recent Rickards High School graduate Errianna Qualla receiving a $1,000 scholarship to assist with attending either FAMU, FSU or TCC.
The program featured an appearance by Mayor John Dailey and Leon County Sheriff Walt McNeil.
Also attending the event was assistant Chief of Police Tonja Bryant-Smith City Commissioners Diane Williams-Cox, Jack Porter, and Curtis Richardson, along with County Commissioner Bill Proctor. The event was also supported by representatives from FAMU, local schools and Tallahassee Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated.
“We are very appreciative of our community support and generosity, and are blessed because of it,” said Brenda Christie, program chairperson.
