Charmettes go virtual for 50th anniversary Ball

In the spring of 1972, Richard Nixon was President, gas was only 15 cents a gallon and Tallahassee was a laid-back college town.
A group of visionary women in the areas of education, law, business, and social advocacy realized our fair city needed a signature event that would honor and highlight outstanding high school seniors in the African American community. These exceptional young women would exemplify amazing talent, grace, poise, academic excellence, and a passion for community service.
The Leon County Chapter of The Charmettes, Inc. put thoughts into action and held their first Debutante Presentation and Ball in the spring of 1972. Since that initial signature gala, the Charmettes have presented to society hundreds of young ladies from Tallahassee and surrounding areas in a formal program and ball.
These former and current Debutantes have gone on to become change agents in all areas of society.
This year the Charmettes will showcase 18 of Tallahassee’s finest. Due to the pandemic, the usual Spring Debutante presentation will be held this month. This upcoming debutante program represents the 50th celebration for the Leon County Charmettes.
The anniversary presentation will be live streamed on the organization’s Facebook page this Saturday, starting at 5 p.m. They eagerly anticipate the Tallahassee community joining with parents, family members, mentors, friends and The Charmettes as we celebrate these exceptional young women!
