Buchanan wins prestigious FAMU scholarship

Dominique Buchanan

FAMU senior health sciences and pre-med student Dominique Buchanan is the 2020-2021 David E. and Mary J. Pollard Scholarship recipient.

Buchanan of Fort Lauderdale is also the 2020-2021 president of the Black Women in Medicine organization at FAMU. She discovered the Pollard scholarship after a close friend encouraged her to fill out the application on the FAMU scholarship portal.

“Applying for scholarships is important to me because I believe in order to get the most out of my education, I need to be able to see it through,” said Buchanan. “I aim to eliminate any obstacles that would prevent me from excelling academically.”

After graduation, Buchannan’s career goals include becoming a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist, as well as the owner and operator of a women’s wellness center designed to serve minority women.

In 2020, a first-generation Haitian immigrant, Blambie Fils, was the second Pollard scholar.

David E. and Mary J. Pollard graduated from FAMU in the 1960s. Decades later, they are still leaving a mark at the University through their generous scholarship. To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be a Florida resident, in their senior year majoring in the STEM or teacher education field and maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher.

Retired Lieutenant Colonel David E. Pollard was awarded an honorary doctorate degree (posthumously) during the summer commencement ceremony in August 2018. Retired Colonel Stephanie L. Foster, Ph.D., a daughter of the Pollards’, is the liaison with the University for the Pollard Scholarship.

“Every year I’m impressed with the challenges these students overcame to get where they are. The character and never quit spirit of every applicant impress me,” said Foster.

Students can apply for the David E. and Mary J. Pollard Scholarship by logging onto the University’s scholarship portal at www.famuscholarships.com. The portal is open for the 2021-2022 academic year. For additional information about FAMU, visit www.famu.edu.
