Staff Report
FORT LAUDERDALE- The 2016 Florida AIDS Walk and Music Festival, an annual 5K walk that raises funds for HIV/AIDS services throughout Florida, gather over 2,000 participants March 20.
This year’s walk took place at Fort Lauderdale Beach with a live concert from chart-topping hip-hop recording artist Flo Rida. Famous for his danceable hit singles “Right Round,” “Good Feeling,” and “Club Can’t Handle Me.”
The event hosted by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), the largest global AIDS organization, and was presented by the AHF Pharmacy, a national chain of pharmacies supporting U.S. and global HIV care.
The Florida AIDS walk is a highly anticipated event steered at increasing South Florida’s awareness, prevention and treatment against the spread of HIV.
According to the latest report from the Florida Department of Health, 5,720 new cases of HIV infection were reported in Florida in 2015, a 22 percent increase from the previous year. The report also estimates that 114,151 Floridians are currently living with HIV/AIDS as of December 2015, with Miami-Dade and Broward counties reporting the highest number of cases.
“Current statistics don’t lie: HIV continues to ravage Florida, and rates of new infection show no signs of slowing,” said Mark Angle, AHF’s Regional Director of Community Relations and Development in Florida, who plans the event each year. “Events like Florida AIDS Walk are still very much needed in our community to remind us that we have a great deal more to do to defeat this disease. I am proud and honored to organize this event for our Florida AIDS Walk participants, who are inspiring in their tireless support of the cause.”
Last year’s Walk raised $1.2 million and this year they exceeded their goal by raising more than the $1.2 million million goal.
