Since Head Coach Chariya Davis’ arrival at Rickards, the girls’ basketball program has turned around. Going from the middle of the pack to one of the best programs in the district.
Since the 2008-09 season (Davis’ first) the program has won district in every season. She also managed to lead the team to the state championship series in each of her first four seasons, which also happened to be the first four in Rickards’ history.
“We work hard everyday to get better than we were the day before”, said Davis. “Our goal for each season is to make it back to state.”
Athletic Director Earl Hankerson, who was on the basketball team staff for the first couple seasons believes this team has the potential to go back to state.
“Davis does a real good job coaching these girls and their potential is starting to show.”
Last year’s team finished with an 18-9 record and lost to Mosley High School in the regional quarterfinals.
That team lost 2 of their leading scorers, but senior Mylesha Penny doesn’t think that will change anything.
“We’ve got a real good group of girls and if we play up to our abilities, I think we can win a lot of games.”
