Organizations for at-risk young people get funding

A $250,000 donation by Sen. Corey Simon set off a slew of financial support given to organizations that have a mission to mentor at-risk young people.
The check presentation by Simon was to the Omega Lamplighters, Inc. to assist with its statewide at-risk mentorship program. The contribution is the result of a bi-partisan measure sponsored by Simon and Rep. Chris Benjamin from Miami Gardens.
During last Wednesday’s City Commission meeting, the board unanimously allocated almost $390,000 to four organizations.
Most of the funding ($160,000) will go to the Capital City Youth Services, Tallahassee Urban League will receive $125,000. Commissioners also approved $75,000 for Scientiae, while approving $30,000 for Pivotal Point Enterprises, a non-profit that says its mission is “to provide educational assistance to students and their parents to encourage responsible behavior change.”
The presentation to the Lamplighters marks the second consecutive year that the Legislature approved funding for the mentorship program.
