Local nonprofits had first choice for furniture from FAMU’s Paddy-Fote complex

Florida A&M University is offering surplus furniture from the shuttered Paddy-Fote residential complex to local nonprofit organizations.
Among the nonprofits that stand to benefit are Refuge House, Big Bend Homeless Coalition, City Walk and others. Each agency will be assigned a floor in the four-building, four-story complex on Wahnish Way.
The furniture, including mattresses, beds, dressers, and student desks, was offered at the university’s most recent surplus property sales but went unsold, said Laverne Washington, assistant comptroller for asset management and head of the Office of Property Records.
“We didn’t sell any of it,” Washington said.
The university has reserved two floors in the complex for other nonprofits who may want the surplus furniture. Agencies had until the close of business last Friday. If no nonprofits step forward to claim the furniture, the university will offer the unclaimed items to residents.
“The University has a long-standing and rich history of championing causes for underserved and underprivileged ministries, local schools, academic organizations, and other organizations and businesses in the community,” Washington said. “These items can enrich the lives of people in the community.”
In 2019, the University shared furniture with the Florida Peoples Advocate Center, which used the beds, dressers, sofas, and desks to help residents of Quincy impacted by Hurricane Michael.
