FAMU president Larry Robinson gets contract extension

FAMU President Larry Robinson received a one-year contract extension, pushing his tenure to at least December 2021.  

During a meeting last Thursday, the FAMU Board of Trustees unanimously agreed to the new contract in anticipation of the year end expiration of Robinson’s initial three-year deal. Presently, Florida Board of Governors regulations limit employment contract renewals for presidents to one year. The new contract is subject to FBOG approval.  

“Thanks for having the confidence in me to continue in this role for the next year,” Robinson said following the vote. “This is a labor of love for me. Thanks for giving me this opportunity to serve.” 

Robinson was named interim president in September 2016 and named permanent president in November 2017. He served three stints as interim president before becoming FAMU’s 12th president.  

BOT Chairman Kelvin Lawson said the past three years have gone well with Robinson at the helm.  

“We clearly have benefited from the president’s strong leadership, as you can see in our performance funding scores, in our increase investments in infrastructure and our overall improvement specifically in our student success metrics,” Lawson said. “This is the right thing to do.” 

Trustee David Lawrence Jr. said he has been a member of the Board for five years and has seen the difference during Robinson’s tenure. 

“Dr. Robinson and his team have done marvelous work, and I’m proud to work for him and the rest of FAMU,” said the former Miami Herald publisher.
