Seminoles Get Notre Dame Quarterback Everett Golson

Florida State football fans have something to look forward to next fall as former Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson announced Tuesday he will be playing for the Seminoles.
Golson graduated from Notre Dame this spring and still had his final year of eligibility to play football. Golson comes to Tallahassee with two years of starting experience and a 17-6 record as a starter with the Irish.
“This past weekend has been a defining moment in my life as I am proud to say I am a graduate of the University of Notre Dame,” Golson said in a statement to Fox.
“The support I’ve received there over the past four years has helped strengthen my integrity, wisdom and character. I would like to thank all of the coaches who spent time speaking with me these past few weeks and considered adding me to their football programs. Their interest and sincerity was truly humbling.
“After much thought and careful consideration, I will utilize my fifth year of eligibility to join the Florida State University Seminoles. To Coach Jimbo Fisher, the Florida State football team, staff, alumni and fans, thank you for allowing me to become part of the Seminoles family. I can’t wait to get started.”
Though he started 23 games for Notre Dame, Golson was benched midway through the 2014 season.
He started his final season at Notre Dame strong, but his production began to decline as the season progressed. The quarterback committed 22 turnovers and the Irish, who had been ranked in the top 10, finished 7-5.
With his one year of eligibility left, Golson will compete with redshirt junior Sean Maguire for FSU’s starting quarterback job after former Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston left school for the NFL.
FSU coach Jimbo Fisher said he was nothing but impressed after meeting with Golson.
“He is extremely intelligent and a very personable young man,” Fisher said. “It’s a pleasure for us to add him to our Seminole family. We’ve been one of the most successful programs in the country the last few years, and we look forward to getting him down here this summer to begin work on helping us continue that success.”
Golson led the Irish to the national championship game in 2012, but an academic controversy forced him to miss the entire 2013 season. During his Notre Dame career, Golson threw for 5,850 yards with 41 touchdown passes and 20 interceptions.
